Prepare to witness a thrilling display of horsepower and adrenaline-fueled action at the Piawaning Expo on September 2nd. The Tractor Pull Association of WA (WATPA) is set to host an exhilarating event featuring the heart-pounding sport of tractor pulling and the lightning-fast spectacle of lawn mower races. Get ready for a day of family-friendly excitement as competitors from all walks of life showcase their skills, determination, and sheer horsepower.
Tractor pulling, born in the 70s in the eastern states of Australia, made its way to the town of Corrigin, Western Australia, in the 80s. Since then, it has rapidly gained popularity in rural communities across the region. The sport revolves around tractors divided into various classes, ranging from entry-level limited to the powerful open class. Tractors are further categorised by weight, engine modifications, fuel type, and physical size.
The tractors participating in tractor pulling events are exclusively Two Wheel Drive vehicles. Distinctions between classes are primarily based on the overall maximum weight, engine modifications, fuels used, and physical dimensions. At the Piawaning Expo, WATPA will showcase the Mini Modified and Super Stock classes, which include Blown Alcohol mini tractors, limited & Super mini tractors, and larger modified tractors weighing between 3 to 4 tons.
Competitors will tackle a challenging 100-meter dirt track, giving it their all to achieve the longest pulling distance within this distance. If two or more tractors manage to surpass the 100-meter mark, a full pull is declared. In such cases, the sled is re-weighted, and a thrilling pull-off determines the ultimate victor.
Tractor pulling is more than just a motorsport; it’s a family affair. The camaraderie among members and their families creates a warm and friendly atmosphere at these events. In a true testament to sportsmanship, it is not uncommon for tractor pullers to selflessly lend parts or even cannibalize their own machines to ensure fellow competitors can continue competing. The sport encourages participation from both women and men, with the only requirement being a current Learner Driver’s Permit. This inclusive nature often leads to fierce yet friendly competition among members of the same family vying for the coveted trophies.
In addition to tractor pulling, the Piawaning Expo will also feature exhilarating lawn mower races. These are not your typical grass-cutting machines, as participants modify and enhance their ride-on mowers for speed and agility. With classes ranging from beginner and kids’ categories to the adrenaline-inducing 450cc class, these daredevils reach speeds of almost 100 kilometres per hour on the straights. Spectators will be treated to awe-inspiring moments as the mowers occasionally lift their wheels while navigating corners.
The action-packed schedule ensures non-stop entertainment for attendees of the Piawaning Expo. With three alternating rounds of tractor pulls and mower races, there will never be a dull moment. Here’s a breakdown of the event’s timetable:
